The book -- set in Oxford, MS, 1901 -- explores the historical account of two murders by moonshiner and counterfeiter Will Mathis and his father-in-law's servant Orlando Lester. The crimes captivated the nation, and while the two men may have been judged unequal in life, they were hung side by side.
