About this Event
We're happy to welcome Jayne Booth to the store! She'll be with us signing copies of her Rocked in the Cradle of Coal series following the release of From the Mine to the Mansion last winter.
Northeastern Pennsylvania was the cradle of the coal industry in the early 1900s. Immigrants escaping poverty and hunger were eagerly recruited by the anthracite mine barons to provide cheap labor in exchange for the promise of a better life in America. Upon arriving in their new country, they faced significant prejudice. But these proud immigrants found strength in neighborhoods, societies, and their faith, and they persevered with a strong work ethic, self-respect, and love for each other.
In From the Mine to the Mansion, 13-year old Ann feels an obligation to contribute to her family's income, and begins working full-time in service to a wealthy family. In the mansion, Ann meets the class differences and modern conveniences that separate her family's neighborhood of mine-owned company houses and the luxuries her wealthy employers take for granted. Ann and the other servants experience the culture shock of living between rich versus poor, and child versus adult, and discover that people everywhere are just people, and we all must help each other.
Perfect for middle grade readers, this is the locally relevant historical fiction series you've been waiting for. Take advantage of this opportunity to pick up autographed copies, sure to be cherished for years to come
