As a professional nurse for more than 30 years, Mary Joosten Lopata, MA, RN, not only assisted with patient care, she also observed patients. At times, she would wonder why the same treatment often resulted in vastly different outcomes. Then her perspective changed when she was unexpectedly stricken with illness. Mary now became the patient and her life was suddenly under the microscope.
